Project Description
The Dan McCarty Middle School project included a phased replacement
of Academic, Cafeteria/Music buildings on an occupied campus. Mr. Bush, the
project manager, was instrumental in the planning and design of the phased
replacement process which included maintaining all life safety systems and
communication systems during the project and completely phased construction
documentation. Mr. Bush, the project manager, was responsible for design,
production, project coordination and maintaining working relationships with
consultants and construction manager. The production of working drawings was
performed under a tight schedule with close coordination with sub-consultants
and the construction manager. Each phase of the project was released to the
construction manager based on the critical path items as defined by the A/E
team and Owner.
The design of the facility was based on the concept "control
and separation". The objective of the school building committee was to
provide a new academic building that promoted a healthy environment for learning,
by maintaining supervision of all students at all times and reducing the noise
level during classes. The academic building was laid out in such a way to
incorporate these major concerns. Locating the bathrooms adjacent to each
classroom and bending the axis of the building provided supervision and control
of student flow. Parent pick up and drop off and bus loops had to be incorporated
into new and existing parking areas. These loops and parking areas were designed
in coordination with the City Engineer to ensure that no addition traffic
loads would be added to existing residential areas. New retention ponds to
accommodate the additional impervious area were located in the middle of the
bus loops.
In addition, the building was laid out site specifically, addressing
all adjacent building and views from the new buildings. Landscaping plans
incorporated the concepts of the building by creating a flow from interior
to exterior transitions.

Project Description
Polo Park Middle School opened the grounds to the students on August 16,
2000. Mr. Bush served as the Designer and Project Manager for this project.
This 5 building, 2-story school is 190,763 s.f. with 1,449 student stations
and was designed to meet the program and budget of the School Board of Palm
Beach County. The concept of the school was to create a community type atmosphere
for all grade levels, hence bridging the buildings together for shared resources.
In addition the school utilizes the academic house teaching concept.
Each house includes a social studies, science, mathematics and
language arts classroom. The labs for home economics, skills development,
art and business development as well as the cafeteria and P.E. areas are easily
assessable from all areas of the school.
Another feature of the school is the enhanced courtyard area designed for
community involvement. The courtyard area includes a raised platform stage
for outdoor performances and access to the multipurpose room for group functions.
A primary issue in designing this area was to limit access to only these areas
for the general public, allowing the classroom and related spaces to remain
secure.
The fully developed 25-acre site includes softball, baseball and soccer fields,
volleyball, basketball and tennis courts and a running track.
Wellington Middle was built under the guidelines of SREF, 97.

Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, Naval
Weapons Station
Charleston, South Carolina
Project Description
This extremely successful project provides new facilities for
the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command (NNPTC) which was relocated from
the Naval Training Center, Orlando FL to the Naval Weapons Station, Charleston,
SC as part of the BRAC III base closures. Due to the Congressionally mandated
time frame (close NTC Orlando in 1998) the design team with Mr. Miranda serving
as the Assistant Project Manager. He was also responsible for the construction
administration (responsible for Barracks, Support Facilities and Galley) and
worked with another architect (responsible for Training Facility and Site)
to prepare design drawings for a two step source selection process.
Contract documents were released for bid 10 months from initial
design award for this $110,000,000 project, which came in 3% under budget.
Even though the program budget decreased by approximately 30% during design,
the project was able to accommodate this decrease while maintaining the Navy's
new "Quality of Life" design standards. The entire project included
master planning a new training campus and preparation of video presentations.
Other notable achievements:
(1) the site was very limited and surrounded by environmentally
sensitive wetlands, and
(2) the building was designed in neoclassical architectural
style and detailed for ease of construction due to extremely tight schedule.

Princeton House Charter School is a relatively small but important
organization that specializes in the education of autistic children. When
the need arose for expanding their facilities to include six new classrooms
and a teacher planning facility, Mr. Bush donated his architectural services.
Through master planning, the site was developed to include a large playground,
additional parking, and areas for future expansion. With new facilities came
a new image and a greater presence within the community.
